SPRINGFIELD- Statement from Senate President John Cullerton regarding Senate approval of legislation designed to avoid a state worker strike and government shutdown.

“This bipartisan legislation sends both sides to the negotiating table with an independent arbitrator to reach a commonsense compromise in order to avoid a strike and state shutdown, which would be devastating. It’s time for cooler heads to prevail.”

SPRINGFIELD - Statement by Illinois Senate President John J. Cullerton regarding the override of SB2043, the MAP grants bill:

“The governor has repeatedly let these students down, students who were promised financial aid by his administration. Today’s vote is an attempt to give the governor the opportunity to honor his administration’s commitments and prove that education is the priority he says it is.”

CHICAGO - Statement from Senate President John Cullerton regarding Gov. Rauner’s veto of SB2043, legislation that gave the governor the spending authority to honor his administration’s commitments to the student financial aid program known as the Monetary Award Program.

“I’m disappointed in the governor. He had a chance to back up his promises with funding. Instead, he let these students down, again. I don’t understand how he can propose funding student financial aid on Wednesday, and then turn around and veto it on Friday.”

The Senate President will discuss with fellow Senate Democrats what steps to take next regarding the legislation.
